I haven't blogged in a few weeks. Work has picked up quite a bit for me and I've been really busy on the weekends...usually out of town! Life is kinda of stressful, but good. I leave tomorrow to go to Plano, then Thursday we fly out to Seattle for my grandpa's memorial service. I predict this trip will be a roller coaster of emotion. Pray for strength for my family and a bond that will be forever strengthened. I'm truly blessed for what and who I have in my life. I know I'm not perfect and I'm going about my life sometimes in a different way than most people expected, but I know God made me pretty special and I'm figuring out how to live up to my potential and be happy at the same time. I've made some great friends lately that mean a lot to me and keep me busy and always make sure I'm doing okay. Lots of decisions ahead and plenty of adventures that I look forward to.

True Outdoorsman

Though out of my two grandpa's I knew him the least, Bill Mathison still was very dear to my heart. A brilliant business man and investor, a traveler, and most of all, an outdoors-man. My grandpa and I got to share that passion the last year. In the last year or so I have grown to love the outdoors, hunting and fishing...something my grandpa lived and breathed for. He taught me to fly fish this summer...something I'll never forget and a time I'm thankful for and will cherish. He was so proud of me when I shot my first buck this past November. It was a way we connected more.
I loved his big hugs
I loved the way he smelled
I loved the penny loafers he always wore (whether with sweatpants or jeans)
I'll never forget that Cabela's fly fishing hat he never took off.
For some reason, his snore's in the camper will be missed.
He couldn't hear a thing, we were always repeating ourselves.
I smile remember him trying to tie a fly and cursing under his breath
I loved how he "always" was "right" haha
I'll miss how he walked...it was kind of slow, but steady and a man on a mission.
He had perfect form when casting...
I loved loved loved his laugh.
I'm glad I got to share special times with him before he left this earth and glad that he asked Christ into his heart a few weeks ago. I will see him again.

"Snake Farm, Pretty Much Is"

What a successful weekend in Waurika! I had such a great time! I filled my belly with good drinks and awesome food!...i realized I have this obsession with cheeeese fries!
Jeep top down, music blaring, Lorrie yelling at us to stop singing EVERY song, me doing the copperhead road dance in front of everyone, cheese fries, bones, dr pepper drink..., burger gone in 5 seconds, losing my beloved aviators, buying new stunna shades that I look ridiculous in, trying to bargain without success, twinkie hats, waiting to get the rattlesnake picture, brick lol, bathroom issues, sluts dancing, ohhh and the list goes on!
Lorrie, Chelb and I were all sad to leave the festivities and the warm sun...
I miss it already.

"Snake Farm, Just Sounds Nasty"

The title is from a song that Ray Wylie Hubbard sings, "Snake Farm"
I thought it was appropriate since I'm going to a Rattlesnake Hunt this weekend...gonna have a gooood time. This picture is from last year.
Rowdy won't be here this year, as he's fishing instead. It will be a girls weekend that is sure to ease my stresses of the last couple of weeks.
I need to clear my head.
So here's to snakes, beer, carny food and girls weekend! Pictures to come....

Two Sides

As many of you know (who know me well), I have recently taken up the hobby/lifestyle of hunting. I wear camo, I shoot guns, I ride 4 wheelers, I throw horseshoes (attempt) and washers, and love going mudding down backroads. Poor family is kinda freakin' out...I mean this girl from the north who loved fashion, high heels, and traveling has been posting pictures of big bucks and muddy jeeps.
Well I'm here to reassure both sides that it is truly possible to remain who I was, yet embrace another side as well. For example, yesterday I was fashion blogging and on style.com looking at New York Fashion Week slides and saving the outfits I loved. Then this morning, I found a license plate tag I want from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Conservation that has a big buck on it saying "Hunt Texas".
I think finding these new things with the outdoors and the amazing and funny people I've met while doing it has added even more uniqueness to the girl who's traveled the world and wears moccasins and shiny leggings. I love learning new things, now more than ever. I have this drive to do things myself even if I have no idea what to do, I wanna learn. I'm still tryin' to find who I am in this world, find my niche ya know.
As much as I love my high heels and blue eye shadow, I've found that my rubber boots are really comfy and camo is a good pattern on me;)

BBD

BBD means Big Buck Down, and thats exactly what happened January 1st, 2010 at straight up 5pm.
We got into the stand a little after 4pm, and Rowdy and I were just talking the whole time about anything and everything...just enjoying the day and the hunt.
At 450pm the feeder went off and we continued talking, not thinking anything (or anything worthy) would come out until later.
A small 3 point buck came out first to eat. He must have been hungry because he ran toward that feeder. He came out from back behind us and to the left.
A couple minutes before 5...rowdy says..."Kate, there's a big buck!"
As I said before, Rowdy likes to joke with me, always sayin there's a big buck and there never is. So, I said, "yeah right"
I knew he was serious when he whispered, "put your drink down and get over here."
I looked behind me and to the left where that other buck and come out and there he was...just walking out, head held tall...a wide 8 point that Rowdy swears he had on his camera earlier in the season.
He had me sit on his lap, I told him I was nervous, he said now was the time to be calm. I got the 30 yat 6 situated...he messed with the scope (which he accidently turned on "3" power rather than "9" power...he apologized for that).
I sat there, he said to shoot when I was ready and had a broadside shot. I waited til I stopped shaking (for the most part). Right before I pulled the trigger I heard ... bump bump, pump pump...my heart was about to come out of my chest in the anticipated silence.
BOOOOOM!
My ears were ringing, my eyes were closed as I was afraid to see the results...Rowdy exclaimed, "You got em girl!!"... I started to shake and kissed him and kept saying "oh my god, wow!"
The buck was thrashing around and I was hoping he wouldn't knock off any tines and die right there...that stupid buck got up and ran into the trees!! But his leg was broken so we were hoping he didn't go far.
Now, to wait....15 minutes felt like an hour. But it was cool to replay it with rowdy as he texted away to friends and family.
The 3 point buck came back to eat, but clearly agitated and curious...he kept looking into the trees where my buck ran off and I concluded (and hoped) that buck was there...hopefully dead.
The 3 point only left when we got quietly out of the stand. I followed rowdy to the kill spot and we followed blood. 10-15 yards later...there laid my buck! Rowdy saw it behind me and smiled and pointed. I ran to hug him and we both ran over to my fallen fighter.
He was bigger than we thought...a main frame 8 pointer with two kickers off the back right brow tine. My first buck...deer...anything...a 10 pointer! My favorite part...I made a great shot ..i guess I didn't need "9" power!;) We took pictures...and I was too excited to smile big. I almost cried!
We went back to get the truck and load up the guy. We were off to Derricks deer lease to pick up him and his TWO does he killed! Three deer in the back of Rowdy's truck was quite a site!
Both the guys were really proud of me and that the "yankee" could bust a buck.
We picked the right day and time to come out, because the last time he came out was the 2nd of November and then earlier that same day (about 150pm Jan. 1st)...what a rush!
I can't tell you how blessed and excited I am. I thank God for that experience and I can't wait to do it again. Thank you Rowdy for letting me kill him and for everything you teach me. I'll never forget it and I'm glad it's you I shared it with.
I'm excited for my Euro mount and meat I'll get back! What a great way to start 2010!
10 more months I have to wait to get another chance...it's going to be a long wait!

Santa Clause Is Coming To Town

Actually....Santa isn't coming...but Bill, Tami, Skutty and Nacho Stepp are!!
They (or "you" since you're the only ones that read this) are coming Monday! I haven't seen my dad or skully since this summer, I haven't seen mom since August-ish and I've never seen lil Nacho.
Am I ready...NO!
I mean, yes, i'm ready to see them, but my place needs more cleaning! I gotta do some dishes...vacuum...sweep my room and bathroom and try and make everything cozy!
This holiday will be a crazy busy, hectic but fun and exciting and full of love!

A Man Like No Other

Today is my dad's birthday.
I wanted to give him a little blog tribute/shout out.
Readers, people of the world, my dad is the best there is.
Whenever someone brings up my dad or dads in general, I get this swell of pride and feel I need to share my thoughts and memories I have of my dad. I know when Tim and I are describing my dad, we have so much to say, but the words barely do him justice. He's just amazing. Our family is blessed and anyone who shares his kind and relaxed company is blessed as well.
Patient, hard working, determined, confident, brilliant, caring, selfless, God loving, supporter, comedian...the list goes on my friends.
I just wanted to say I love you dad and you have supported and loved this family every single day...and we are the people we are because of you. Happy birthday:)
p.s. not to say his partner in crime isn't just as great...my momma is his other half:) love you c

The Huntress

I am getting my hunting license tomorrow...
I can't tell you how excited I am to try something new.
I only wish I had an interest in it when my papa and dad would go...I could have learned so much! Now I'm playing catch up and this yankee better learn quick!!
Did I tell you that Rowdy's friends call me Yankee Doodle...I love it.
He's lucky to have such a different girlfriend;)
I should be packing deer meat soon out at Hunters Haven, which will be another new thing.
I'm at work and sleepy...at least I'm feeling better this morning. I'll keep you tuned for my upcoming adventures.
Yankee out..

10 Point

Mister Mountain Man Rowdy shot himself a nice 10 point texas buck on a wheat field at his deer lease yesterday around 430pm. I got the text
"Just smoked a 10"
I thought it was a joke, because when he gets bored in his stand, he usually sends me a text saying he saw a 170 class buck or shot a 10 or whatever...only to just be joking.
But it was for real this time and I was happy to be one of the first to find out and get a picture!:)
We went to Nick's (hunters haven) and awed and oooed and heard the story of the hunt. It was a great night and he had the biggest smile on his face. I'm proud and glad I got to share it with him:) I look forward to seeing the shoulder mount he gets from it.
I also had this amazing piece of cheesecake...pumpkin cheesecake. pumpkin pie and cheesecake in one...can't get any better than that!!
Now....it's my turn!

love

This is not a traditional post for me. Reason being, I'm usually a smart...butt...on this blog and talk about fun trips or things that I want. Another reason is because of how this relationship is...it's not all mushy gushy, showy, flashy. This post is not about something I want but about something I already have. Recently I have been shown things I truly appreciate in a person and a relationship. Anyone I've ever been with has always been very possessive over me or selfish or there is a slight disregard for my ambitions. Now that someone has shown me the opposite, I find myself in disbelief and I don't quite know how to handle it. I now find that sometimes I'm holding myself back...not some significant other, which is weird because it's never been that way before. It is that person who now pushes me to go for something better and something I've worked hard for and deserve, even if it means a strain or sacrifice. At first it bothered me...and now I just appreciate it and I am thankful. I believe from the bottom of my heart that this is the truest, healthiest and most down to earth relationship I've ever been in. Different for sure and at times frustrating, but fun and spontaneous and challenging (in a good way...i hate to be bored) at the same time.
I know the family has been worried about me and I haven't communicated much about things to anyone...not because i don't feel i can share, but for once I want to figure it out on my own, without running for help. I now think I'm getting a healthy balance...talking and discussing, but still doing it on my own. I know I am a difficult person to handle at times and can be completely emotional and irrational but I truly appreciate the people closest to me for putting up with it and I hope to make up for the idiosyncrasies I dish out.
Love is an amazing thing and I am beginning to see what it truly looks like.

A Time of Trials
This time in my life is full of disappointment and trials. I didn't go back to run this year...many people in the Athletic Dept. are upset and won't even talk to me...very mature right?!
I am poor as poor
I don't have a place to live
I'm gaining weight because fast food is cheap
I have chest pains and anxiety
BUT
I have a couple great friends
A boyfriend that helps me forget the stresses of life
A family that is more supportive that a pushup bra
A job....
And GOd watching over me sayin Katie this is where you learn the most.
And while i'm well aware this is a learning time, I get really mad and frustrated at the same time. Some people have it so great and easy...others struggle for survival at times.
Thank you for those who make me smile these days. I'm strong and perseverant. And I will conquer this challenging point in my life no doubt...i just hope it's soon.
